Bellegarde-sur-Valserine is the fourth largest city in Ain Department (one of the 99 French territorial divisions). It is located at the gateway to the Parc Naturel du Haut-Jura (Regional Nature Park of the Haut-Jura), close to Switzerland as well as both Savoy Departments, and in the middle of a popular tourist area.
